Our volunteers impact girls by supporting efforts to advance their interest and confidence in STEM activities.  Without our dedicated group of volunteers, STEM Like a Girl couldn’t provide workshops and resources for girls and their families.

Volunteer Opportunities

Are you someone who works in a STEM field looking to excite and inspire girls? Did you have a mentor who encouraged you to pursue your science or engineering interests? Be that person for young girls and their families by volunteering as a mentor with us! Or are you not in a STEM field but looking for an opportunity to impact girls and their families through fun hands-on science and engineering activities?

Consider volunteering at one of our workshops! Volunteers keep our workshops running smoothly by helping lead activities, welcoming girls at registration, and encouraging them during the projects. Whatever your interest or time commitment is, we have a role for you! Both male and female volunteers are welcome.

If you are not from Oregon or Washington, please check back for new volunteer opportunities as STEM Like a Girl grows and expands our program to new geographical locations. If you are interested in bringing STEM Like a Girl to your community, please check out our Start a STEM Like a Girl Site information page to learn more about what is involved.

Description of Volunteer Roles

  • Set Up: Help set up tables/chairs, activity supplies, snacks, etc.
  • Registration: Greet participants as they arrive and check them into the workshop.
  • Activity Guide: Help guide and support the girls through the various activities during the workshop. This includes leading them through short Ice Breaker activities, providing guidance and help during Design Challenges, and encouraging them throughout the workshop.
  • Design Challenge Leaders: Facilitate one of two Design Challenges during the workshop. Working from the provided curriculum, the Design Challenge leader will introduce the activity, provide background, and guide the participants through the project. This role will require a short online training with the Workshop Coordinator prior to the workshop to go over the project, get comfortable with the supplies, and answer any questions.
  • Female STEM Mentors: During the mentor panel, introduce yourself and share your STEM background with the participants and answer questions. We welcome female-identifying mentors of all ages and stages of STEM careers. This is a really informal panel so please don’t feel intimidated!
  • Clean Up: Help pack up supplies and clean up the room after the workshop is completed.
  • Floater: Fill in where ever is needed during the workshop.

We are currently recruiting volunteers for the following workshops. Please click on the button for workshop specific information and to sign up as a volunteer.
