This week’s Wednesday’s Women in STEM Series features Brynn Thomas, an undergraduate student at Chatham University. Read on to hear Brynn’s advice to girls about keeping an open mind and making sure to enjoy what you are doing!

When did you first become interested in STEM?

I first became interested in STEM when I began taking science courses in high school that challenged me in an exciting way. A personal medical issue led to me frequenting Children’s Hospital and I soon became fascinated with the science of medicine.

Where did you go to school and what did you study?

I am currently a second-year biology/pre-med student at Chatham University in Pittsburgh, PA. Studying science has opened many doors for me thus far in my life. I was able to apply and become accepted to medical school during high school through an early acceptance program. I was also able to take part in a special volunteer opportunity at a hospital near my hometown where I interacted with patients, physicians, and residents and learned more about the career I am pursuing.

What is your current career and how do you use your interests in STEM on a day-to-day basis?

As a pre-med student, I am constantly able to fuel my interests in STEM by challenging myself in classes, getting involved in clubs, and taking advantage of research opportunities.

What do you like most about your current job?  What do you find most challenging?

Being an undergraduate student is a lot of work but is also very fulfilling. It feels good to know that I am working toward a very long goal of mine to become a doctor and to help people. It is challenging in the way that becoming burnt out can sometimes be a threat

What advice would you give to young girls who are interested in pursuing STEM activities or careers?

No matter how difficult it may seem to reach a goal, keep pushing toward it. Keep an open mind about the path to get there because STEM is a fascinating field that can take you on many adventures. Lastly, it is so important to enjoy and have fun with what you’re doing, so follow the path that leads you to that point.
